What Were Mistakes You've Made When You First Joined the Fashion...

Hi friends! <3

Another post for the Lolita Blog Carnival. Feel free to check the group out at

This week's topic has us looking back to our early days in the fashion and reflecting on mistakes we have made. I think it's a great way to see how much we have improved and learned along the way.

I got into lolita fashion back in 2009 when I was in college. I was drawn to the cute prints and pastel colors. I wanted to wear them and be cute and colorful too. Unfortunately, I didn't have too much extra money and the know how to pursue it properly at the time. The following year I attempted a lolita outfit of my own, which I wore to a local con. And here's a more recent pic of a coord.

Back then, I thought it would be easy to create an outfit or coord. Seeing these pics side by side, a few things stand out to me...

Using loliable items instead of items specifically designed for lolita-
I used clothes and accessories that I already had instead of spending money on new things. I didn't see why I should spend money when I had a bunch of perfectly good clothes. I didn't realize my dress was too short. It also had the wrong shape; meaning no room for a petti under there either. The blouse was more suited for work with the pointy collar. Lolita blouses have high necks, rounded collars, and ruffles or lace. I'm wearing sandals instead of proper closed-toe shoes.

 No bloomers-
Yes, I wore underwear with my dress, but I didn't wear any bloomers over them. It seemed like a weird concept to me at the time. I ended up buying a few pairs of cute printed pj shorts to wear with my coords. After awhile now, I feel weird not wearing them if I'm in a skirt or dress. Even outside of lolita.

No petti-
Like with the bloomer issue, I didn't get the point of wearing a petti either. I'm not sure how I missed the connection between needing to wear a petti to make my dress poofy. I also didn't know how to go about buying one and how to pick a good quality one. Now you can search online, ask others for advice and even read reviews.

Lack of accessories-
I wore regular jewelry and made my little top hat. That's fine and all, but it didn't help my coord any. Accessories should be suited to the coord and help enhance it. This means that I should have gone for more cutesy and noticeable pieces instead. The large brooch on my headbow, sparkly cutlery earrings, and parfait necklace help tie my coord together and convey 'this is a sweet coord.' It also allows one the opportunity to personalize their coord and be unique.

There were also some misconceptions that I had.

Lolita was only for petite or tiny girls-
I love the brand Angelic Pretty. Everything I saw was being modeled by these tiny little Asian girls. I thought there was no way it would fit me. I know I'm not huge or anything, but by Japanese sizing standards I am considered plus sized. And I'm tall too. I believed that everything would either be too small or short on me. I later learned how to find clothes that fit my measurements and certain cuts or features to look for. Things such as shirring, adjustable straps, and longer lengths. Lolibrary (https://lolibrary.org/) is a great reference tool for doing this.

Lolita was expensive-
I thought I could not afford it as a student. I dreamed of getting a job, making a big paycheck and buying all the pretty things I wanted. While I didn't gain steady employment right after graduating, I did save up enough over time to be able to buy the occasional item. I spent many hours browsing the sales listings online noting what I liked, how much different things cost, and trying to mentally prepare myself to spend $40 on a headbow. You can also buy direct from the brands, or from a variety of auction/sales sites. Secondhand items are a lot less pricey than they used to be (unless you're after an older/rare item). Sometimes you can even get items new with tags!

Lolita was not suited to me-
I fell in love with the cute prints and colors, but wasn't sure about being so girly. I wore a t-shirt, jeans, and sneakers most of the time. The idea of dressing up in pretty skirts/dresses and in bright pastel colors was too much for me to do right away. So, I wore the sweet prints in the darker colorways (sometimes called 'bittersweet'). I worked my way up to wearing them how I originally had wanted to all along. It felt great to be confident in expressing my love for something so far outside my comfort zone.

Whew...  I didn't expect this to be such a lengthy post. I hope you've enjoyed reading it. If you'd like to see what others had to say about this topic, check out their blogs below:

Rose Head Dress Opening!

Hi friends! <3

I got a navy x black head dress to go with these two Moitie dresses. It's by Atelier Pierrot, but I couldn't find out what it was called when I tried searching online. I will update the post if I find out.
*Edit: It's called Rose Head Dress. No stock pic for this exact one, but they seem to have a few similar styles one using the same lace.

Thoughts:

The head dress is lovely <3 It has soft lace with roses, silver braid trim, and bows on the ends. The blue colored fabric in the middle part is similar to Moitie's blue, so it will go great with either dress I had in mind. Possibly a few other ones too now that I think about it. A long ribbon on either side of the head dress allows me to tie it behind my head to wear more comfortably. I also noticed that it sits lower on my head, as compared to the Meta one that has a slight cushion underneath allowing it to sit up higher. I don't mind though. I'm looking forward to wearing it soon. Maybe to a Halloween meet-up with one of those Moitie dresses. Add a black long sleeve blouse, lacy otks, and some jewelry with crosses... What do you think?

What is One Piece That You Could Never Give Away & Why...

Hi friends! <3

Awhile ago, I joined a group on FB for lolita bloggers thinking it would be a great way for me to get  motivated to blog more and also reflect on various topics more in depth. I put off posting due to being behind on my blogging, swearing that once I was caught up I would start taking part in it. I'm happy to say I am currently up to date, and excited to join in with the others. The group is called Lolita Blog Carnival. You can check out the group if you're interested at https://www.facebook.com/groups/lolitablogcarnival/

Each week you can vote on a topic you would like to blog about. The one with the most votes is the chosen topic for that week. You are not required to blog about it if you don't want to. If you do decide to blog, you are required to share links to other bloggers who have also written about it.

With that said, now let me think a bit. Hmm...

I would have to say that the one piece that I could never give away, would be this skirt and headbow set...

I bought it back in 2011 from a girl in the local comm shortly after I got into lolita fashion. She had posted it for sale and it immediately caught my eye. I had wanted to get into sweet style lolita, but was intimidated by all the pastel "girly" colors. Since this seemed to be a darker, more toned down version of that, I felt like it was something that I would be able to wear. It also features my favorite fruit; strawberries.

Look at those strawberries! Ooh... I love them so much! <3

It seems to be handmade and the quality is very nice. The girl I got it from had bought it from another girl online. I'm not sure who originally made it though. The skirt fits me perfectly with a little bit of shirring in the waistband for comfort. There are colorful fruit parfaits along the fabric and cute polka dots in the background. The headbow lays flat on one's head making for a more subtle look. It was a great starter piece for me back then and continues to be a favorite in my wardrobe even now. Since then, I have sold off almost all my lolita skirts except this one. I just can't bear to part with this one.

I especially like how versatile this piece is to wear. I've worn it to meet-ups, on casual days at work, and out to family gatherings. I can pair it with a blouse and cute jewelry, or just a simple cutsew for a more casual look.

Strawberry Tart Otk Opening!

Hi friends! <3

I found the otks that went with the Strawberry Tart lucky pack set :-)

Thoughts:

These are super cute otks! They are stretchy and comfortable to wear. The design remains intact even when being worn on a larger sized leg. Many times I've gotten otks, put them on, and the design becomes weirdly distorted. But not with these; so I'm really happy. They will go great with my Strawberry Tart jsk set and possibly a few other jsks that I have with strawberries in the print.

I was somewhat surprised to find out that they are not white, but rather an ivory color. In the stock pic they looked white. Also, the lucky pack set originally had a white blouse with it. I wonder if that was ivory as well then? It's not too noticeable though unless you're holding them side by side with the white part of the print. Anyways, I'm looking forward to wearing them sometime soon :-)

Snack Time: Pocky Green Tea!

Hi friends! <3

Trying out another variety of pocky. From an Asian grocery store.

$3.99- Pocky Green Tea- Japan

Let's open it up...

Individually wrapped packets...

Unwrapping it...

Nom nom…

Thoughts:

I thought it was handy that the pocky packets were in a paper tray inside the plastic bag. It made it easy to just slide the tray out, grab a packet, and put the rest away for later. The tray also provided some protection to the sticks from getting squished and/or broken. The coating appeared to be of the standard amount, and the stick was slightly shorter in length. There was a faint green tea smell when I first opened up the packet and a nice green tea flavor while eating too. The taste lingered in my mouth for a bit afterwards and then gradually faded away. When I ate another stick, it refreshed the intensity of the flavor.

These were really good! And a great deal too; with 9 packets each having 6 sticks. The entire package lasted for multiple snacking sessions. I would definitely get these again!
